8th Grade Summer Reading List & Information, 2010

Dear Incoming 8th Grade Students and Parents:

Welcome to 8th grade! Below please find the summer reading list. One book, “The Boy Who Dared,” has been given to each of the students on loan. Students must bring these books back on the FIRST day of school. The other books are available at Barnes & Noble, Borders and many second hand bookstores, or you may choose to purchase them on line. Please do not view films of these selections, as they often do not include all of the scenes, characters, settings etc. Please note, the summer reading assignment is two fold:

            1. Read the books
            2. Take an accurate set of outlined notes summarizing each chapter or section of the books you are reading. For the book, "The Boy Who Dared," you will be taking notes for every 20 pages read.  You will be graded on your TYPED NOTES (FONT 12, TIMES NEW ROMAN) as well as your writing assessment which you will complete during the first week of school. If you do not have notes for both of the books you have read, you will not receive a passing grade.

Each student is required to read “The Boy Who Dared” and ONE of the following books:

1. Books that will complement Social Studies topics:
            a. Across Five Aprils
            b. Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom

2. Books that will complement Literature topics to be covered in The Prentice Hall Literature text: Silver:
            a. The Diary of Anne Frank
            b. The Pearl
            c. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
            d. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

3. Books that complement Science topics:
            a. Albert Einstein: The Giant of the 20th Century Science

4. Books that complement Religion topics:
            a. The Chip Hilton Series (Sports related; Christian themed)
            b. Select a book about a saint

During the first week of school, students will be assessed on their summer reading. This assessment will serve two purposes. First, it will serve as your first TWO TEST grades for the first marking period. Remember, as you apply to high schools, we are required to send them your year end grades for 6th and 7th grades, and your first marking period grades for 8th grade. In addition, the two assessments will be used to determine reading and writing strengths and challenges. This information is critical as we begin our year and determine how we will proceed. At the end of the year, we will post-test and our goal is to chart a marked improvement in a wide variety of academic areas as we prepare for high school.

Happy Summer Reading! May God richly bless your family with His peace!
